Lot 392
UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Aurum Barbarorum. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Aureus' (Subaeratus, 18 mm, 3.40 g, 12 h), 'Early Group'. Imitating Severus Alexander, 222-235. IMP ALEXO[.]DI PIVS AV Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Severus Alexander to right. Rev. V\Λ[..]\\\O Mars advancing right, holding spear in his right hand and shield in his left. Pierced and with minor breaks in plating, otherwise, very fine.

From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.

A derived version of lot 391 above, this piece retains a mostly legible obverse legend and a fine portrait, whereas the reverse is more clumsy and carries a completely blundered legend, indicating that the die was either crafted by a different artist, or that he did not care about the reverse as much.
